HRA FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

1 What is House Rent Allowance (HRA)?
HRA is an allowance paid by employers to employees to cover residential rent costs. Under tax laws, a portion of this allowance is exempt from income tax, while the remainder is taxable.
2 How is the tax-exempt portion of HRA calculated?
HRA tax exemption is the minimum of three values: (1) Actual HRA received, (2) Rent paid minus 10% of basic salary + DA, or (3) 50% of basic salary for metro cities (40% for non-metro cities).
3 Which cities count as Metro cities under HRA rules?
For HRA calculations under Indian income tax laws, only Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai are classified as metro cities, qualifying for the 50% basic salary cap. All other cities qualify for the 40% cap.
4 Can I claim HRA if I live in my own house?
No. HRA tax exemptions can only be claimed if you reside in a rented accommodation and pay actual rent. If you own the residential property or do not pay rent, the entire HRA allowance received is taxable.
5 Are my private basic salary numbers secure?
Yes. All salary numbers, HRA allocations, and rent figures process strictly locally inside your web browser sandbox. No financial data is ever shared or stored externally.
